Did you know that the creator of Lost had a Hulk versus Wolverine comic book come out the other day?

One of the mods at MillarWorld.net makes the valid point about Marvel dropping the ball when it comes to publicising its writers that come from outside the comic book world.

Astonishing X-Men could have sold twice the amount had Marvel pushed the fact that it was written by the creator of Buffy and Angel.

I knew.

Im sceptical how much difference them publicising this stuff would be though, Whedon and the Lost guy aren't household names like Stephen King (which yes, they will be total dumbasses if they don't pimp the hell out of his name on the Dark Tower thing he's doing for them), there's only really the hardcore fandom who would care they're doing something else, and even amongst them, you still have the stigma of it being a comic book, so a chunk of the fandom are going to dismiss it, how well do the ATS and BTVS comics do for instance?

They probably would get some increase from publicisng it more widely, but would it be enough to warrant the effort?

If Marvel had put an in the major papers publicising Joss' X-Men, I reckon it would have got a fair number of the people who watched Buffy and Angel (and who don't post online) picking it up. Plus it might have got the fans of the movies buying it too.

Anyway, Ultimate Hulk versus Wolverine was so good. Love the art. Ultimate X-Men verus the Fantastic Four was kinda underwhelming.

I did know that Damon's first issue came out the other day. And I've been looking forward to it since it was announced.

And I personally think Marvel has done a wonderful job of letting people know when they have writers like Joss Whedon, Damon Lindelof, Kevin Smith, etc. writing for them. Joe Quesada makes mentions of them often in his Cup 'o Joe interviews/panels. Plus, each issue of 'Astonishing X-Men' is always in the top ten when it debuts. What more could a comic fan reasonably want?

I agree...

The only thing I know about U. Wolverine vs. Hulk is that it's written by a "Lost" guys, because everything I've seen about the book proclaims that and virtually nothing else. I don't think newspaper ads are going to help anything, because I would wager that the majority of comic readers don't read the newspaper. Anyway, Joss got plenty of attention for "Astonishing." I thought his first run had fabulous dialogue, but the stories were less than Joss' best. That said, it was still head and shoulders above most comics, so I will buy the second run as well.
