Great read, Simon! Especially "But what's the point of parody when real life does it so much better?" and "It's empowering. We are reversing the gender roles." Where did I hear that one before?? *roles eyes*
As a philosophy student I've encountered many papers that had crazy subjects and of which I wondered whether the writer was serious. Actually I'm still thinking about writing that paper entitled "The reality status of alternative universes in Buffy the Vampire Slayer". (In good fun of course.)
*shudders* So scarily true. I try not to hear about the antics they get up to, but sometimes it's like watching a train wreck, you can't look away. I've been known to (very occasionally) read fanfic, but most of it is total dreck. And it's just gross to write sexual fic about children, not "empowering." IMHO.
"Snape, who's been the baddie through six books, is almost universally adored, something which puzzles me until Debbie McLain, a volunteer and 'stay-athome mum' who's the main organiser of Lumos, explains it to me by saying that 'a lot of women are drawn to the characters who they hope may experience redemption'. "
Seriously? I mean, really, seriously? NO WAY. Women being drawn to Angel, Spike, Logan, Lex Luthor, Jayne and other bad boys is puzzling? Who would have thought. That's not something that has ever happened before.
Apparently, this journalist has *never* watched one single episode of Buffy or, you know, watched any TV at all.
Well, what do I expect, she did't actually read the HP books either.

Redemption! How I've missed you.

Hilarious. I love that paragraph.
