Owing to some great chat elsewhere, I decided to ask our Whedonesque Twitter followers "Have you ever used terms like Team Angel or Team Spike?".

I actually saw the other day in a discussion of The Hunger Games someone use the term "Team Peeta or Team Gale?" which... reading the books, what?! How disrespectful of characters put through hell.

I blame Twilight.

Did they really? That's just sad on a lot of levels. I cringed when EW.com did an article about how the trilogy could be the new Twilighty.

I think Georges Jeanty doesn't really get that there's a difference between Buffy fans and Twilight fans. Hence his use of the terms. And because "Team Edward" etc. is used in that fandom, serious Jossverse fans wouldn't be caught dead using the terms. Real vampires do not sparkle.

I wonder if he knows the words "Spuffy" and "Bangel"?

I think newer fans would use the terms because it's something that they're familar with.

Answering here rather than on Twitter: no, I haven't. If I'm referring to Bangel or Spuffy, I say "Bangel" or "Spuffy". And you know what, I really don't even like smushing up names like that.
