Americans, Canadians and Australians must prove that they can speak English before getting UK citizenship.

BBC magazine article

Bit odd.

I know you have to demonstrate your ability to speak English when you apply for US citizenship. Not sure if that applies to Brits and Australians though.

I was under the impression that was if the person was coming from a non-English speaking country. When I was looking at the requirements for coming into the states and getting citizenship, I think they excluded some countries, including Canada, for the language requirement. I may, however, be wrong. *shrugs*

I can understand the need to have people be able to speak the language of the country they are wanting citizenship for but to ask for proof of english knowledge from countries where English is either a primary language or one of the national languages is a bit much. Especially from commonwealths where exceptions are made in other areas.

An interesting article nonetheless.

Hmm. Interesting. Although my Californian Godfather couldn't understand me when I said 'Harry Potter' because of the difference in accent. Hmm...
