Orson Scott Card praises Firefly and the fans react vehemently. Still this is a storm in a tea cup compared to what the gay and lesbian Marvel fans think of him writing the Ultimate Iron Man mini-series.

Ugh. *rolls eyes and sighs*

I wish I hadn't read all that.

Dave Sim, for those who don't know, created and wrote the brilliant comic-book series CEREBUS, then proceeded to use its editorial pages for increasingly batshit-insane misogynistic screeds. Now, I can no longer read his comics with an open mind. I keep looking for his philosophy to creep into the work and ruin it. For years I raved about how freaking amazing CEREBUS was, and now I feel betrayed. Did his astounding satires of politics, war, and religion suddenly turn into woman-hating garbage? No, but I find his personal politics so repellent that I can no longer seperate the artist from the work.

Card, same deal. ENDER'S GAME is arguably the greatest SF novel of the past quarter-century, and even though it was no secret Card was a devout Mormon, with all that entails, I still felt betrayed by his editorial in support of the anti-gay-marriage amendment. Did his books suddenly turn from sensitive, incredible, coming-of-age SF novels asking significant questions about life and death into hateful, homophobic trash? No, but it's getting harder and harder to keep an open mind about his work.

That being said, I cannot deny (as some posters have) that Card's (or Sim's, for that matter) work isn't totally brilliant. I prefer to think that the author of ENDER'S GAME like FIREFLY, not the right-wing columnist.

Ha ha!

I ignore his politics! And still love his books! Go me!

Seventh Son is amazing, too, and I also really liked The Lost Boys, a horrorishy novel.
