I heart David Fury.

Big public fight in the world of Lost

Oh man. This is just unprecedented. Never seen anything like this before in a fandom. Were the Lost writers making it up as they went along? Heck probably.

thanks for that. An interesting read. I've heard about the Rolling Stone interview and I kinda thought it sounded like Fury wasn't really being honest for some reason.

I think the funniest thing is that maybe 90% of the viewers don't know or give a toss who wrote what, and why and whether there's a grand plan. They just switch on the tv and try to catch an episode now and then.

It's all about your point of view. I agree with Javi that you can never have every little plot point orchestrated in advance - there has to be room for change and improvement or the whole thing goes stale fairly fast. As long as there is a skeleton of the story arch that's all you should need. They did it that way all the time on Buffy - I don't understand why Fury would disown the process now. Sounds like he holds a major grudge against the show.

Honestly, my first reaction:

"David Fury mouthing off and attacking people in print is news?"

While I do suspect that Lindelof and Abrams' ultimate vision is on the hazy side, this does sound pretty petty. And if he was that upset about the direction that the show took, then he shouldn't have been endorsing it on the Emmy stage.

I've been avoiding Lost

Despite it's almost unwatchable acting, I love Babylon 5 because it really is a novel for TV. Conversely, I bailed on both Alias & 24 when it became obvious the creator's didn't have an overall arc planned, and were just jumping from cool "surprise" to "surprise" -- and it felt completely hollow.

But reading Grillo-Marxuach's essay, I'm now convinced there really is a plan. His comparison to B5 is apt, and comments JMS made during the B5 run support his argument. JMS had a arc, and he had to adjust mid-stream when the real world interfered with arc, but (mostly) managed to do so & keep the arc moving forward the way he originally planned. If Lost is trying to do the same, it can make for riveting TV.

So now I'm off to get the DVD, and I'll be setting Tivo for Lost later tonight! Thanks for the link, Simon.
