God almighty what next? iPod sex toys? Unbelievable. Who in their right mind would want to watch an episode of Lost on a tiny screen?

iPod sex toys

A friend of mine got one of those space-clam looking orange and white iBooks a few years back and someone gave her a matching "iBrator". I have no idea whether the color scheme is sufficiently copyrightable to cause a lawsuit to ensue.

Oh, and Think Secret is reporting that the new iPod (which is NOT being marketed for feature films) has a video output that can be used to project whatever's on its harddrive onto a TV.

People will still buy it by the boatloads. It's basically an iPod with video capabilities. If people want to buy the regular sized iPod for music, they will. Still the same price, etc., just now it has the video capabilities.

I would, when I'm at work or otherwise not able to bring my whole TV with me somewhere (cause, damn that thing is heavy).

That's my gripe with video-enabled phones. I just. don't. care. how many stupid "only on your (insert phone name here)" mini-shows are created. I don't want them.

The theory is that, if the copyright issues can ever be worked out, you'd be able to transfer DVD movies onto your iPod for A) watching on planes etc should you be willing to tolerate the small screen and B) replay from the iPod on any TV recent enough to have an AV input (and possibly computers?). That day is probably pretty far off, though, as the MPAA and Apple are very far apart on what acceptable terms are. This is the same reason why the iPod phone is going nowhere fast - phone companies would rather rent you low-quality 30 sec ringtones for $2.99 a pop then allow you to install all the music you already own onto your phone for free. Cingular only picked it up because they figured the iPod brand name would sell enough new contracts (especially since no one else is carrying the things) to make it worth their while. In the mean time, you can buy the latest music videos and some Pixar short films for the low, low price of $1.99 until the content producers agitate for a larger cut and thus a larger price tag. :-/

I don't give a rats ass about special ring tones (I cared when I first got my phone, but when you hear the BtVS theme song, or the one from Star Wars played at least 2-3 times a day in all of it MIDI glory, it gets annoying) either.

I also have no aspirations to ever get an iPod, iAnything, MP3 player, etc. I had to be persuaded to get another stereo for my car after the last one was stolen, and my stereo is under a pile of clothes. However, I do have Launchcast Radio from Yahoo! on all day long at work.

I'm just a weird and cranky consumer. :)

I usually don't "watch" movies away from home; I usually "listen" to them.
Because my workplace is noisy, I usually have headphones on and a movie playing in the background.
So for me, "listening" to the movie on the iPod would be fine. And it would be nice to be able to watch movies without dragging around the mini-DVD player (even though it is small) or the computer...
Still, since I would have to "re-buy" everything, I doubt I will get one.

Some products have more synergy than others.

I've never really understood the feature sets around mobile phones (although that new LG Everything-but-the-Kitchen-Sink does look kinda neat), because to me, their primary purpose is to keep people connected on the go. So contact lists, text messaging, and walkie-talkie features? Those make sense. Solitary entertainment features (games, music, etc)? Those just clutter up the tool.

But with an iPod, the purpose already IS to take your media with you. So I can see people thinking of this as a way to avoid carrying multiple gadgets to perform very similar tasks.

I'm still not paying $300 for the privilege, though.
