The whole thing is a disaster for all parties. I'm concerned about how this will play out in the mainstream press once news gets out. Cause I think reporters aren't going to take the side of the fandoms and then everyone who takes part in an LJ fandom will get smeared.
There is that possibility, yes. In my limited experience, reporters tend to take a story and sensationalize it as best they can. Such could be the case with all of this. Unless they somehow see it as a freedom of speech issue or perhaps a censorship issue.
Mainstream Press: PERVERTS LIVE AMONG US! Normal people: GASPSHOCKHORROR! Fangirls: OPPRESSION! OPPRESSION! Me: *playing with action figures* Oh, Angel, I love you so much! I love you too, John Sheppard, smoochy smoochy LJ: *never the same again*
Well, word from some of the victims is that the LJ Abuse team has been as helpful as possible. So not everyone at LJ is an idiot.
The WFI blog looks like it's run by a bunch of knee-jerk vigilantes. Sure, jumping headfirst into a situation you don't understand and throwing accusations right and left is ALWAYS a great plan and NEVER hurts anyone.
Of course, it's your own fault if you write about anything questionable, even in a negative context. From now on, all villains in all genres are restricted to drinking straight from the milk carton and refusing to replace rolls of toilet paper when they run out.
What cracks me up is that they're deleting these journals and communities because they're afraid they're promoting illegal activtity by using a keyword of "incest" or "pedophilia." But on the other hand, in the past month I've a)downloaded movies and TV shows from links provided in LJ communities, b)read a discussion about how to procure opium on ebay, and c)read a discussion on the best way to get around "street-legality" when customizing your car/motorcycle, all of which are more immediately illegal than fanfic about brothers who might be banging each other. But they aren't as sensational, I guess. We have to think of the children...
