Should I be depressed that some of my first year university students didn't know what "family name" means?

*jaw drops*

Although I'm not surprised, I'm amazed some of them I've seen staggering about here are allowed out on their own.

What bothers me is that students entering University this year were born in 1989...same year "Batman" came out.

No, you should just point at the teachers that have been teaching them the past 18 years.

Maybe they only knew the word 'surname', but I guess that's wishful thinking...

I had a student who couldn't spell his name and no, he wasn't dyslexic.

But could they at least spell it?

How did they GET into your school in the first place, then?

Oh, their parents filled out the applications. Never mind.

I'm still depressed that in Brazil, we have teachers who are so lazy to read, that you have to spell it out everything so they can understand what they're supposed to figure out by themselves.

(yeah, late comment, finally catching up to old Livejournal posts)
