I finally gave into the dark side of my music passion and bought some 80s power ballads off iTunes. This is not an easy thing to admit seeing as I am a Pixies fan who also saw Nirvana back in the day.

Anyhow here's the stuff I purchased.

Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart
REO Speedwagon - Keep on Loving You
Phil Collins - Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)
Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes - Up Where We Belong
Jennifer Rush - The Power Of Love
Eric Carmen - All By Myself
Cutting Crew - (I Just) Died In Your Arms Tonight
Chicago - Hard To Say I'm Sorry/Get Away
Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse Of The Heart

If you share a passion for cheesy 80s music, do let me know what your favourite songs are.

It's not cheesy

Just a little dated. For me, the 70s and 80s blur seamlessly, so perhaps some of the songs are a bit prior to the 80s. From my iTunes collection:

Berlin--Take my breath away
Cyndi Lauper--Girls just want to have fun
Daryl Hall and John Oates--One on one
Donna Summer--Bad girls
The Doobie Brothers--What a fool believes
Fleetwood Mac--Landslide
Heart--These dreams
John Waite--Missing you
Luther Vandross--Here and Now
Pat Benatar--Love is a battlefield
Phil Collins--In the air tonight
Thomas Dolby--She blinded me with science
Toto--I'll be over you
Tracy Chapman--Fast Car
ZZ Top--Sharp dressed man

I got a dissaproving look of my Significant Other checking his email at the opposite desk when I started singing "All By Myself". I too have a weakness for cheesy eighties tunes. "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" must be one of favourites. Me and my sister would sing it together with one of us doing the "Turn arounds" and the other one going "Every now and then I feel a little bit lonely cos your never coming round". We should do that again for old times sake. And to annoy the hell out of her eldest daughter who hates when we burst into song. Three years old and already she feels the shame when grown-ups act silly.

I'm a bit dissapointed there's no Abba on your list, Simon. Nothing is as good as Abba's "The Winner Takes It All".

Abba are too good to be tagged as a power ballad band.

Oh, power ballads are by definition "bad" then? *updates dictionary of pop-terminology*

Not bad in that sense of the word. Just too cheesy to be taken seriously. It's the musical equivalent of Charmed.

Total Eclipse Of The Heart is probably my all-time favorite 80's song. And Against All Odds is my favorite breakup song. Others top picks (which may or may not all actually be from the 80's) include:

Belinda Carlise - Heaven Is A Place On Earth
Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes - I've Had The Time Of My Life
Cher & Peter Cetera - After All
Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time
Debbie Gibson - Foolish Beat
Don Henley & Patty Smythe - Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
Foreigner - I Want To Know What Love Is
Irene Cara - Flashdance
Laura Branigan - Self Control
Mike & the Mechanics - All I Need is a Miracle
Mr Mister - Broken Wings
Patrick Swayze - She's Like The Wind
Starship - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now
Taylor Dayne - Love Will Lead You Back

And most everything by Pat Benatar and Heart.

Those song titles bring me a bout of severe nostalgia.

I can remember dancing to Cutting Crew's (I Just) Died In Your Arms Tonight at a school dance and feeling great. My collection would also have Mister Mister - Kyrie Eleison.

And no, this isn't usually my music, but I used to love that song.

Total Eclipse of the Heart and Against All Odds. Timeless. Well, no, but still favourites.
