Buffy being rejected by Spike and Angel is a deliberate nod to the Bush era where America was ignored and made fun of by Europe and Asia. Quite why no one else in the fandom can see is because they are fucking idiots and I know best. Now if you excuse I must go and write chapter 15 of "Spike and Wesley in chains".
