Not really, though possibly a little in early S5. More a caring big brother, though. But one eight times her age, of course. (I don't find them a plausible romantic combination either, though.)

Their juvenile antics rule out a father role. Brother or older friend friend fits the bill.

As gillo said they're not a romantic combination at all. But, I never would have said that about Xander and Dawn either.

I think he filled more of a big brother or uncle role in her life, supportive but more fun than a father figure.
