1) Ignore the concept, come up with a catchy title. Such as "Spike's Progress". It helps if you're dimly aware of the classic book that the title is based on.
2) Now come up with a concept. Spike in the Future! That's never been done before so now you're onto a winner.
3) Figure how many chapters you will write and then cut the amount in half. Less is more. Plus you'll never write that much anyhow.
4) Target your audience. If you want ten or less to read it then post it on LiveJournal. Otherwise Tumblr will do.
5) Post it on Whedonesque and then wait for it to get deleted. They don't do fanfic, what's up with that?
6) You need a great opening sentence. "After the events in the alley, Spike hid in the shadows and drank for a hundred and eighty six years." Why 186 years? That's the hook.
7) Pairings are out of fashion at the moment so find out what the fandom is really interested in.
8) Remember morally you own the characters because you watched the show.
9) Proofread your work by using iPhone's autocorrect feature. You can not go wring with this.
10) Remember to put “the end” at the end of your story. Otherwise people will not know that your fanfic is finished.

It's about quality, not quantity. You get the best quality comments on LJ. I average 20 comments per fic posted, give or take. But of course, you post your fic everywhere for exposure: LJ, archives, tumblr.
