Last night I was trying to remember what bands I had seen in my time so here goes.
Jesus Jones - well you have to start somewhere. Soho supported them , they were the ones who sampled that shimmering guitar music from the Smiths "How Soon Is Now". Hah.
Carter The Unstoppable Sex Music - loved them at the time. Now they're just faintly embarrassing to listen to.
Curve - Their first three EPs were the best any band of that time produced.
Manic Street Preachers - Saw them before they were famous. We'd bottled off the support act and then they came on wearing straitjackets. They mentioned my friends in an NME interview there's a train tunnel near where I live and my friends used to go there to get high. A train would through, suck out all the air and my mates would get a rush as a result. Still one of the best UK bands around and their early stuff was mind blowing.
The Inspiral Carpets - back during the early 90s Madchester scene, their anthem "This is how it feels " ruled.
Nirvana supported by the Breeders and Teenage Fanclub. Best line up ever. See we lived in a tiny Northern Irish seaside village, British music was kinda dull at the time and we were buying Subpop records before the hype began. Saw Nirvana on the last day on my A-Level exams, I saw Courtney Love wandering back stage pregnant.
Therapy? Seen them 3 times in all. No idea why. The lead singer Andy Cairns caused me to have the worst look of my life. Shaved head with a tuft at the front and a goatee. *gah*
Primal Scream - saw on them on my birthday. Most blissed out gig I've ever been too. 'Higher than the Sun' played and people were sitting around the wall smoking joints.
Anyway those were the bands I saw in Northern Ireland. Once I started university in Manchester in 1992 there were loads more.
The Pogues - No Shane McGowan or Joe Strummer on lead vocals. Failed to make any impression on me. Probably cause they were shit.
Babes In Toyland - yeah they ruled.
Sonic Youth supported by Pavement. Kim Gordon is a goddess and the orginal drummer was mad as a hatter. He handed out diced carrots when we went into the gig.
P J Harvey supported by Tricky. She didn't do Sheela-na-gig but she had the best stage presence I had ever seen. Tricky was good but that was before the massive hype of Maxinquaye. Me and my mate Abby were going "that sounds like that Portishead song".
Hole - She really didn't like the Cranberries or Pearl Jam. Great entertainer. "This ones for Kurty , you know my husband?". Nearly spilt up with the girl I was seeing as a result of going to that concert.
Mudhoney - they were like the founders of grunge and "Touch me I'm sick" is a classic. My greatest musical memory is on the afternoon of the gig they walked past me going down on the street outside the students union. Remember I was from a tiny seaside village. It mattered. During the gig, I was moshing at the front and had to get pulled out cause I was drunk and about to puke.
Suede - seen them three times as well. My band of the 90s for personal reasons. In years to come, they will be recognised for what they were.
Way After university.
Evan Dando - didn't even know he was playing that night in Belfast. Me and my mate Jenny went for a drink and saw that he was doing a solo turn in the Empire. It was special, brought back a lot of memories especially for her as there's a pic of her in the Lemonheads "Come on Feel the Lemonheads" album sleeve. We tried to see him afterwards for old time indie's sake but didn't see him but we got worshipped by a bunch of 14 yrs old when they found out what bands we had seen in the 90s.
Jurassic 5 - who are just mad and their sampling of the Rocky theme drove the crowd wild.
JJ72 - last band I have seen. Indie U2. Very pleasant indeed.
Bands I wish I got to see. The Stone Roses , the Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, R.E.M. and Oasis.
