Hardback or Paperback There is the third option. You know those really tall paperbacks. Softbacks?
Highlight or Underline People who do either should be shot.
Lewis or Tolkien Both are equally tedious, though Lewis does not write three pages about the description of a single piece of grass.
E.B. White or A.A. Milne E By Gum
T.S. Eliot or e.e. cummings Weren't both very bigoted in real life?
Stephen King or Dean Koontz King lost his title as America's greatest writer after Tommyknockers.
Barnes & Noble or Borders Waterstone's to be honest, it's more upmarket and refined. Barnes and Nobles is very relaxing but full of people sitting on the floor and serves ghastly coffee.
Waldenbooks or B. Dalton Waldenbooks has comic books.
Fantasy or Science Fiction Fantasy writers write 6 books which should have really been condensed into two. I'm mean when you see a title that says "The second book of the third trilogy of Elden the mystical Goblin" your natural instinct is to vomit.
Horror or Suspense Horror There are very few good horror writers left.
Bookmark or Dogear I have no idea what this means.
Fitzgerald or Steinbeck Fitzgerald is just an upmarket PG Wodehouse. Steinback is good but gawd do people fawn over his material.
John Irving or John Updike My dad was born in a town called Irvine
Le Guin or Emshwiller Having drunk Emshwiller whisky, it is not an experience I would wish to repeat.
Russ or Cherryh ?
Rice or Hamilton Ann Rice is single handly responisible for goth teenagers thinking that they have a valid life style. Get over yourselves.
Bronte or Bronte Emily.
Homer or Plato Plato.
Geoffrey Chaucer or Edmund Spenser Chaucer is sexier.
Pen or Pencil Does anyone actually write anymore?
Looseleaf or Notebook It's all in my head.
Alphabetize: By Author or By Title I prefer bunging the book in a bookshelf and then looking for it months afterwards as you would be surprised what you find.
Dustjacket When it rains.
Novella or Epic Depends on my mood.
John Grisham or Scott Turow Grisham was good. But he's succumbed to his own hype and therefore his latest novels have meandering plots. Turow is very good indeed.
J.K. Rowling or Lemony Snicket Rowling. She's the best.
Fiction or Non-fiction I like both equally.
Historical Biography or Historical Romance Her heaving bosom sighed as Lord Peter came into the room blah blah blah
A Few Pages per Sitting or Finish at Least a Chapter At least the book, god I love being able to speed read.
Short Story or Creative Non-fiction Essay Both
"It was a dark and stormy night" or "Once upon a time" I grew up with Once Upon A Time so I'll co with that,
Buy or Borrow Buy
Book Reviews or Word of Mouth Book reviewers are usually friends of the author or have a grudge so can not be trusted. Word of Mouth well ummm whistles.

Do you save your spot by slipping something between the pages or just by folding one down?

A Few Pages per Sitting or Finish at Least a Chapter At least the book, god I love being able to speed read.

Now I wonder if you were serious or sarcastic :D I don't always finish by books in one sitting, but it's also not unusual for me to read two books in one evening (such as last night). So, I rarely feel the need to mark my place.

He's serious

I've known him to read an entire book in 2 hours. Long books. And he can read two or three on the flight from Heathrow to San Francisco. I kid you not.

And he dogears. He's just being Irish :).

I just wasn't sure if he was serious about not knowing what 'dogears' means once he explained that he was a fast reader :D I tend to hit reply before I finish reading the whole post (and then read it as I'm replying).

I count my own reading speed in pages per hour, because it's the easiest way to figure out how long it will take me to read a book. It's not really accurate, because font and page sizes vary widely (especially since I read everything from kids lit to text books) but it gives me a maximum time that it will take (or minimum number of books to bring).

But it sounds like Simon's an even faster reader than me. How long is the flight from Heathrow to San Francisco?

A tall paperback is called a Trade Paperback. No, I don't know why.

It's actually called a softback or soft cover in Dutch. They are very common over here, cos, well, the language group is a bit too small to spend so much money on hardcover.

Careful! Haven't you ever seen pictures of your wife during her teenage years?

when I dressed like that it didn't have a name. I was Goth before goth was goth, bro!

And no, I don't think he ever has seen a picture of me from those years...you can't photograph vampires you know, so maybe you can't photograph goths either???

And aren't you in Japan???

I am. Or at least, I was when I wrote that (home now).

In a recent development, the Internet has gone world-wide. Perhaps you missed the news that day?
