Stargate: SG1 was so much fun last night, really felt like old school Stargate. And despite my indifference to its spin-off, Atlantis redeemed itself wonderfully last night. There was a terrific camera shot involving Teyla which was worthy of Spielberg or Scorsese. And the episode itself actually had some very tense and moving moments. So it's gone up a lot in my estimation.

And truth be known, I keep an eye on eye on other fandoms. The Star Trek one is in chaos at the minute. Imagine if a majority of Buffy fans had hated Angel from the start and saying how awful it was compared to Buffy. And when Angel got cancelled, instead of a united fan campaign to save the show it was a piece meal half hearted effort. Well that's what it's like in regards to Enterprise. There's even a site that urges fans to send letters to UPN congratulating them for cancelling it.

Moving onto Alias and Lost, I'm picking up signs of a renewed backlash against JJ Abrams. Today Herc at Aintitcool voiced his dissatisfaction with the current season of Alias (spoilerish btw). And in this article about Lost (again spoilerish btw), certain comments mirror complaints at Whedonesque about the alleged meandering complex storyline. Now I haven't seen the show but I've been highly impressed by the devotion its getting and how passionate its fans are. However, there does seem to be parallels between JJ splitting his time between two hit shows and Joss dividing his time between Buffy, Angel and Firefly. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

I'm firmly of the belive that all fandoms consist of many people who are as mad as hatters,of those that I'm part of, when ever I see over wrought angsting and bitching, I just smile, shake my head and say affectionately "ah, those wacky fans". Course I used to be doing the over wrought angsting and bitching, but hey, you live, you learn.

It's funny, I haven't seen too much backlash against Lost, but when I do, I laugh at the people. They are always wanting everything resolved and want to know what in the hell is going on with all the different storylines.

Well, let's think about that for a second: You've got a brand-new show introduced to the public, one with a bunch of mysteries that the characters are trying to solve. Little bits of the various puzzles are found here and there, but nothing is solved yet.

Now if the complainers had their way, everything would be explained by the end of the show (the Polar Bear, the metal hatch, the unseen monster, Ethan, the French woman, the various character's reasons for being there)... everything tied up in one nice, little bow.

Then... what? What for season 2? If everything is solved, what the hell are they gonna do on that island? It would get either 1) BORING as all hell, or 2) Rediculous with a whole bunch of new "mysteries" suddenly appearing out of nowhere.

It's silly. I think the pacing of the show is just fine.

I can kind of understand the "Lost" criticism

I mean, I understand that the show has a long arc (that just gets longer the more popular it is) and you don't want to give eveything away, but there does seem to be a lack of focus sometimes.

To take one example, recently two people were kidnapped and one left for dead (actually *was* dead, briefly.) The other one still remained missing. Did the next episode have the remaining survivors forming a search party? No. Were they shoring up their own defenses, knowing there was a killer/kidnapper at large? Not until the missing girl *came back* and a direct threat was issued.

I mean, I'm all for complex plotlines (I loved Twin Peaks, after all) but I wish the characters did more that just *react* to the latest mysterious threat.

That being said... check it out when it gets across the pond.

Yeah, after the Pilot, the episodes of Lost have gotten substantially less suspsenseful when they should have gone the opposite way, with the survivors seemingly not at all concerned about the events going on around them. Giant thing in the woods? Eh, who cares. Killer polar bears running rampant? Let's build a golf course.

Also, it does seem like a lot of things happen on the show for the sole purpose of convenience and not having to explain any of the mysteries surrounding the place. It's not that I want to know everything going on on the island, but it's a little ridiculous that you'd have an interesting character go through the trouble of kidnapping someone, and have that someone escape, only to have amnesia, and the kidnapper get shot and killed at the end of the episode, explaining absoultely nothing about why he kidnapped her in the first place. I'm all for being withholding, but this is getting silly.
