Though I don't know, tea towels sounds like a good idea. Though you can't go wrong with money and champagne. Especially at the same time.

My family has never had a problem with getting stemware.

A registry might have been presumptous back when most of the wedding guests lived in the same town as the bride and groom and could have made educated guesses as to what the happy couple would like. Nowadays, however, people travelling halfway across the country, if not the globe, to attend weddings can't be sure that the coffeemaker that they want to give as a present isn't already in use or isn't already wrapped up by three other guests. I think that the registry can be very helpful, as long as it isn't attached to the invitation or anything.
